Crater Lake National Park in United States is located around 250 miles south of Portland, Oregon. It is the fifth oldest national park which was established in the year 1902. Crater Lake was formed after the collapse of Mount Mazama around 7,700 years ago. The explosion which created was considered to be 42 times as powerful as the 1980 eruption of the Mount St. Helens. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States with its deepest point in the lake being recorded as 1,932 feet.
The pure blue color of the lake has long been attracting many artists, photographers and nature lovers. It has pure blue crystal clear water because it is so deep and pure. The water in the Crater Lake is filled by rain water and snowfall.
Rim drive: Rim drive is a 33-mile two lane road which encircles the caldera of the Crater Lake. The rim drive starts at approximately 30 miles from the main visitor center at Rim Village.
You can enjoy the beauty of the lake from over 20 viewpoints along this 33-mile rim drive. Not all parts of the Rim drive are open year round. During the winter season (from mid-October to mid-June) the North Entrance road is closed because of deep snow and icy condition.
Hiking: There are over 90 miles of trail including both one-way and loop trails. There are hiking trails which goes up to Crater Peak, Mount Scott, and Garfield Peak. If you want to go down to the lake, there is a trail named Cleetwood Trail which takes you to the surface of the Crater Lake.
Weather: Weather here change drastically in any season. So go prepare for any type of weather. Carry extra food and water especially if you are staying overnight.
Camping: You can do camping inside Crater Lake National Park. There are only 2 campgrounds; they are Lost Creek and Mazama Campgrounds. You should check weather before heading for camping. Nice warm clothing is must for the night stay.
